Good for theory and getting a solid foundation, but if you’re expecting an “all in one” course, you won’t get that here. You will have knowledge gaps, and have to do a lot of your own testing and learning.

If you are at a beginner level, I’d say this is a decent course and won’t break the bank.

For example, while some courses teach you how to do outreach, this course teaches you how to find the right influencers who will create better content around your target keywords.

Also, you get access to a downloadable certificate that has the HubSpot seal.

To be a free course, it’s surprisingly detailed and contains a lot of useful content.

7. Advanced Content and Social Tactics to Optimize SEO by University of California

Even though this isn’t a link building course, per se, it teaches the basics of content marketing, social media, and effective communication. It is a specialization within the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Specialization course, also hosted on Coursera, and has been made in partnership with University of California, Davis. 

This will indirectly improve your link building efforts. After all, link building is all about effective communication and influence.

So, this specialization course will teach you how to create great content and build relationships with influencers that will help you stand out in a crowded market.

What Makes This Course Special?

This is not your typical “Add meta titles” kind of course. It covers advanced and technical techniques that professionals use to build links, get traffic from social networks, and create a solid inbound marketing strategy.

This course is taught by Eric Enge, co-author of “The Art of SEO,” so you can guarantee the content is good.

Course Curriculum

  • Section 1: Introduction to advanced content and social tactics to optimize SEO. This section explains what the course will cover and what you can expect.
  • Section 2: Social media marketing. This section explains how to use social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to promote your content.
  • Section 3: Influence marketing. This section is all about how to find people who can promote your content.
  • Section 4: Creating world-class content. This section shows you how to create content that will attract links and social shares.

Who should sign up for this?

If you are in the SEO and marketing field, and looking to attain a very formal qualification, this is probably one of the few places where you can go. And it is taught completely online, so you don’t have to attend classes in person.

You will receive a verified certificate endorsed by a US University – UC Davis, which is great as an addition to your CV and qualifications.

However, some of the advice is going to be very high level, and some of the lower star reviews did pass comment on areas that need to be improved. Some felt the content marketing examples used in presentations were at times too old and outdated, while another criticized the fact that “The moderator uses case studies from huge national and international businesses with huge staffs and budgets”, so you may find it hard to take this theory into practice with a smaller business, or a startup with a low budget.

Despite this, it has a high 4.5+ rating on Coursera.


The only way to get this course is via the Coursera Plus subscription which is either:

  • $399 per year

And you would need to pay the monthly or annual subscription until you complete the course.

How Can You Choose the Right Link Building Course?

When you need to choose the right link building course, the best one for you, is going to be dependent on a few factors. 


If you are just trying to establish a foundation level knowledge, or trying to select a course to just give a junior team member some high level overview of link building – then I’d recommend first going with one of the free courses, or something at a very low cost. 

At the same time, when you’re at an intermediary or senior level, or you need something that is highly actionable, and so you can get started ASAP with link building – be prepared to pay. The best courses that offer that level of nuanced advice are not going to be cheap. If its not a one-off cost of a few hundred dollars, then it’ll be a monthly membership fee to access. 


The amount of time you can spare, will also dictate what you can take on. For instance, course number 7 we mentioned above, seems like a short course at 4 lessons – but it takes at least 16 hours to complete. Whereas the course from CXL takes about 4 hours.

If you’re trying to fit this around the day job and only have time in the evenings or weekends to review, just take into consideration the duration. 

When it’s a more in-depth course and you want to put it into action, yourself or the team will also need the time to actually execute – so make sure to factor this in, if they are actually teaching link building techniques.

Accessibility and Format

Is the course instructor-led, is it self learning, online, in-person? Make sure to check before selecting a course. There are quite a few out there which do require you to go in-person, or to take the course at a conference. 

But take the course that best suits your learning style and schedule. 

If you just happen to be going to a conference anyway, it’s worth checking what courses they are running on the day. BrightonSEO for instance, will often have some courses and workshops happening at their conferences. 


If you’re specifically looking for a certificate, to help enhance your portfolio and CV, then make sure to check that it does come with a certificate beforehand, and how you can access it. Some certificates won’t hold much value, depending on the company you’re applying to, and where they’re based – so make sure to take that into consideration. 

For instance, a US company may not be that familiar with one of the Indian or European digital marketing institutions – but they may be impressed with the qualification from UC Davis.

Current knowledge base

We’ve touched on this already – but how does the knowledge in that course align with your current level, and where you need to go next?

If you’re a beginner, don’t sink money into an advanced course and just take one of the free ones to gain experience. 

But if you’re a business owner trying to educate yourself about advanced link building tactics, or an in-house SEO trying to learn for your in-house operations – you’ll want the premium options, because you need to keep up with the latest tactics (or be ahead of the curve if you’re buying TLGs upcoming course.)

On top of that, you need hyper-specific advice and over-the-shoulder videos, so you can see practically how the process works. The problem you’ll find with many courses in this space is too much theory.

Instructors experience and expertise

The background of the instructors behind the course is also important.

The major SEO tools out there, have a course of some sort. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the link building course has been created and refined by a link building specialist. In fact, more often than not, it’s created by an in-house team who are simply repurposing content, and they probably haven’t done link building outside of their own company. 

While content marketers whose entire career spend inside massive brands, while very credible, can offer advice that applies mainly to their sector, and which worked for those companies, in those situations. 

If you own a brand outside of Martech or SaaS, the likelihood of one of the course providers actually having built links in your industry… are probably quite slim. 

You would really need a true specialist, and someone with years of experience dealing with many sectors, to offer that level of advice. 

But, if you’re looking for beginner level advice, if you are working in an enterprise-level company, or you’re in the Martech space and just want that general overview – the other courses are probably sufficient enough for your needs. 

Wrapping Things Up

All of the courses are good in their own way, but each one covers a different topic.

At the end of the day, it’s about personal preference. Look at each course description, and you’ll be able to see which one is the best fit for your learning style. The TLG one is definitely one to watch out for when it’s released. 

Just remember, no single course will be enough to master the game of SEO or link building. You also need to practice and learn from your mistakes.
